Lawyer Paul Kiesel discusses medical malpractice and his battle against MICRA.

Paul Kiesel received his Juris Doctorate from the Whittier College School of Law in Los Angeles in 1985. In 2005 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Law from Whittier Law School. His practice is devoted to representing consumers in personal injury, class action, environmental and toxic tort litigation.

Mr. Kiesel serves as Chair-Elect of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Litigation Section. He was appointed by Chief Justice Ronald George to the State of California Judicial Council Civil and Small Claims Advisory Committee. He has served on the Board of Governors for the Consumer Attorneys of California and the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles. After serving on each board for over than 10 years, was elected an emeritus (life time) board member of each organization. From 2001-2005, Mr. Kiesel sat on the Board of Governors of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers (ABTL).

Mr. Kiesel is A.V. (highest rating) rated by Martindale-Hubbell and has been recognized as one of the top 50 Trial Lawyers by the Los Angeles Business Journal and one of the 100 most influential attorneys in the State of California by the California Business Journal. He is a frequent presenter for continuing legal education programs. Among his many clients, Mr. Kiesel represented Former Governor Gray Davis in a challenge to the qualification of the State’s Recall Election of 2003. Mr. Kiesel currently represents numerous municipalities, including the City of Los Angeles, in a class action on behalf of all cities in the State of California for payment of occupancy taxes owed by the on-line travel industry.

The human eye is constructed like a camera … with a clear lens in the front and light-sensitive tissue at the rear. This tissue makes up the retina which acts like photographic film.

In an eye that has perfect vision, light rays passing through the pupil are focused by the lens to fall precisely at the center of the retina. There are many common problems that can affect the eye and prevent light rays from focusing properly on the retina.
Medical Malpractice
Three of these problems, myopia – or nearsightedness; hyperopia – or farsightedness; and astigmatism can often be corrected or reduced with the use of PRK laser surgery.

Myopia, or nearsightedness, occurs when the shape of the eye is too long or the curve of the cornea is too extreme. In this case, light rays are focused on a point in front of the retina – instead of on the retina itself.

Hyperopia, or farsightedness, occurs when the shape of the eye is too short. In this case, light rays are focused on a point behind the retina.
Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is unevenly curved,
causing light rays to fall off center or not to focus properly at all.
In either case, PRK laser surgery can be used to flatten all or part of the cornea … allowing your doctor to cause the focal point of light entering the eye to fall more closely to the center of the surface of the retina.

PRK is a simple and nonintrusive procedure that is designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. PRK laser surgery generally does not have any effect on a patient’s overall health and there are no risks in choosing not to have the surgery.

Vasectomy is a surgical procedure that serves as birth control by permanently cutting off the flow of sperm to the penis.

In adult males, sperm is continually produced in the testicles, or testis.
Both testicles are contained in the scrotum – a pouch of loose skin that hangs outside the body, below the penis.

Young sperm mature and are stored in the epididymis, a small structure at the rear of each testicle.

When the male experiences sexual climax, a pair of muscular tubes called the vas deferens transport sperm away from the epididymis.

As the sperm moves towards the penis, it enters the seminal vesicle where it mixes with the seminal secretions.

These are the fluids that make up the major component of the semen that finally reaches the penis and is ejaculated.

The Vasectomy procedure prevents sperm cells from reaching the seminal vesicle by cutting both vas deferens near the testicles.

But because the procedure does not interfere with the production of semen in the seminal vesicle, men who undergo a successful vasectomy are still able to – though their semen will no longer contain sperm cells.

So make sure that you ask your doctor to carefully explain the reasons behind this recommendation.
