When you shadow physicians before medical school, who do you contact?
The doctors themselves or the hospital? I need to shadow a few physicians (hopefully emergency medicine) before I fill out my med school application and I don’t know how to go about it….
You have to contact the hospital and see who you are allowed to shadow and if the hospital will allow shadowing.
Good luck!!

Don’t waste time contacting the hospital. You will need to contact the individual physicians; some will and some will not allow you to shadow. However, most are willing.

First go talk to any physicians that you know. It doesn’t matter what they are certified in because you won’t be doing anything except shadowing. You are doing this so that you can say that you have a better understanding of what a physician does, not to pick your residency before even applying to medical school. If you don’t know any physicians call a hospital and ask about shadowing. Don’t go for a level one trauma center, they have enough students and have larger fish to fry than undergrads looking to shadow. Look into a smaller hospital that will be more open to having you shadow.
