Why did my doctor send the bill to my emergency contact?

My parents just called and told me that there was a bill addressed to "The Parents of [me]." I have not lived with them or been on their insurance for over a year (I am 23). When I went for my annual "female" visit, I used the insurance that I pay for at work. I received a small bill for the part that was not covered by my insurance. I paid it immediately, and the check cleared the bank. Today my parents received a much larger bill for that visit. The only way they could have gotten my parents information is from the emergency contact list. I would have gladly paid (or contested) the bill had it been sent to me first. I do not like the idea that they would send a medical bill to my emergency contact. Is it a mistake? Is this a normal practice? Is this legal?
I’m glad I didn’t put my boyfriend as my emergency contact!
Receiving this bill worried my mother: she thought they sent it to her because I couldn’t pay or because something was wrong with me. Neither are the case! I don’t want my mom to worry about my money or my "lady business."

Since it was your parents, I don’t think that there should be much of a problem. Though, I think your situation is a little crazy! :o

The doctor that you visit isn’t the same one that you went to when you were a child, or still under your parent’s insurance?

I think that it’s just a mistake, not a normal practice. I would contact my insurance company or the doctor’s office and ask them about it though. They shouldn’t be sending that information out to your emergency contacts, since they aren’t there to receive your bills…but rather for an -emergency.-

Hope you get this all worked out.

  1. Call the doctors office and let them know about the error.

  2. maybe they thought you died! as for legality, mistakes do happen and no court will find that you have been harmed in any way. besides, the only way for something illegal to have happened in this situation is if someone other than you opened your bill. that would then fall on the head of whoever opened your mail.

also, if you are so curious as to why they sent the bill to someone besides yourself, just call and ask.
