DVLA drink drive medical – Do the DVLA always ask for more info from your GP after the medical?

Hi All,

3 weeks ago I attended a medical arranged by the DVLA as I have had 2 drink drive offences in the last 10 years. I am now 25 and have a wife and 2 children. At the time I got caught I never drank often, but was a binge drinker at weekends and that is how I got caught.

I now drink 1-2 times a week and never have more than 4 cans of lager/cider at a time. I drank 2 cans of lager maybe a week or so before the medical and don’t smoke and have never done drugs. Ok, so I know I should pass my medical with flying colours and was very confident.

However I rang the DVLA a week after my test and they said they have got my results and have written to my GP for my medical history (which is nothing, I have only ever been to my GP for earache and a kidney stone once) and that this is standard procedure. Is it? I have read people get their licence back within a week or so and hear nothing of them writing to their GP’s?

Maybe I am just worrying but after reading loads of forums I read about 1 guy who very rarely drank and didn’t get his licence back because they found something wrong with his liver which he didn’t even know about and this was not drink related.

So, basically…does anyone know if it is standard procedure for the DVLA to contact your GP for more information after you have gone through the medical? I had to give a urine and blood test and all the physical tests the doctor carried out she said were fine.

Thanks
Thanks Ron,

Yea, please let me know how you get on with regards to them allowing you your licence back. My doctor sent mine off on the 09th and as your were told their should be nothnig to worry about…can’t help it though! lol

I’m in a similar position, I rang DVLA (Medical Dept.) last week and they said they would be writing to my GP, I went to see my GP to explain this because I have never seen him on an alcohol related problem and he said there would be nothing to worry about.

He received the form tuesday this week and returned it the following day, I’ll be phoning DVLA today to check if they’ve received it and how long it’s going to take, I’ll let you know what results I get.

I’m afraid the DVLA are a law unto themselves and are legally allowed to withhold your licence even if you haven’t been banned or if your ban is up.

PS Be prepared for answers from the usual perfect people who will preach to you about your folly.
