How do I utilize a contact for job networking for a hospital position? (Kinda long question)?
Here’s the story: Way back in 2004, I used to be a hospital volunteer at the Cypress-Fairbanks Medical Center in Houston, working in the ER Registration & Triage department. I liked that volunteer job, but I held it until the end of the year.
Now, there’s a newly-built hospital right next to my house (North Cypress), and I, a college grad now, was looking through their careers website to see if there was anything good for me.
I found this:
"Registration – ER
Registers patients in a professional, pleasant and timely manner. High School diploma or equivalent. One to two years previous admitting experience in the emergency room preferred. Bilingual in English/Spanish desirable. Meditech experience preferred.
Part Time, Saturday and Sunday 11: 00 a.m.– 11:30 p.m."
This job’s ideal! So I applied online three weeks ago, and have yet to hear back anything.
Now, my mom went to the hospital yesterday, and happened to have picked up the name of the ER Registration manager there.
The thing is… that ER Registration manager at North Cypress… used to work with me at Cy-Fair 6 years ago! Which is pretty awesome!
How would I go about talking to the manager on the phone, and inquiring about the job for an interview?
What should I say?
Just call the general HR phone number and tell them you placed an application with them online a few weeks back and you are following up to see if interviews are being scheduled. Usually this is enough to get their attention and pass along your application to the hiring manager, but you can also ask the HR representative if you may contact the hiring manager directly as well to speak to them about the position to ask questions, etc. and they might go ahead and give you their contact information. If you do talk to the hiring manager person that you know from before, just reintroduce yourself and how you know them and just tell them you are very interested in this job. The ball is then in their court – either they want to interview you or they don’t. Good luck!
