My bruise is getting bigger and worse, what can I do at home?

I had a pedestrian incident the other day. A speeding car hit a traffic blocker and it came toward me hitting me in the hip and knocking me down. There were no witnesses at the stop and non of the cars stopped to help. I have no insurance and have contacted the city about the incident and have not heard anyting from them. I have a huge bruise on my butt and it is red and getting bigger and also some more bruises have appeared. I cannot afford medical care and the hospital in my area is kind of upscale and they expect payment proof upfront (my dad went the emergency room one time and had to show insurance immediately). I need something I can do at home to heal these bruises.

You are in a jam if you didn’t get the license plate number of the speeding car that started all this. You are in a jam if you didn’t call the police at the time of the incident. You are in a jam if you think the city is going to rush out to help you. Did you ever hear any of the jokes about fighting city hall. The city has nothing to gain by helping you out here….All hospitals request insurance infomation upfront because they have to know how they will get paid. It doesn’t mean they won’t treat you if you don’t have insurance. Even if the hospital is a for profit one, I do believe they have to treat you if you present to the emergency room. They might then transfer you to a non-for-profit place, or hook you up with a clinic or something like that, but in America, I’ve never heard of a hospital that can legally refuse to treat you in an emergency room because you have no insurance. Believe me if they are upscale and for profit, they are too concerned with money not to have a social worker who works out how people with little or no money can get the funds for the hospital to be paid. You need to go to the hospital and you need to be checked out if those bruises are getting bigger, and you need to do it now. You probably need to talk to a lawyer about the city’s responsibility toward you, since it was city property that hurt you. Don’t expect the city to offer you help. Get a lawyer, but just go to the emergency room first, and go now.

Not much you can do to heal a bruise. What you likely have is a hematoma…bleeding into the tissues from the impact. Treat swelling with ice, pain with NSAIDS like Ibuprofen (not aspirin or Aleve, as these have blood thinning properties that may make the bruising worse) or tylenol. I have once seen a hematoma from a fall that probably contained a pint (1 litre) of fluid, that resolved on its own.

Sorry you had such a terrible incident!

    Feel better.
