Faith Healing Death – Oregon City Followers of Christ Church

The death of a 16-year-old Oregon boy being treated by a faith healer could have easily been prevented according to a state medical examiner.

The 16-year-old member of a faith healing church died of uremic heart failure caused by a stricture in his urinary tract, according to autopsy results.

The condition could have been treated with a catheter in a routine outpatient procedure.

Instead, 16-year-old Neal Beagley’s urinary tract became inflamed and closed off.

He was unable to urinate, which made his bladder and kidneys stop functioning, the autopsy showed.

Toxins backed up into his blood stream.

Beagley had started complaining about stomach aches and shortness of breath last week.

The family told police he did not want medical attention.

Gladstone police said relatives and church members told them the teenager refused treatment for the illness, as he was entitled to do under Oregon law.

The family belongs to the Oregon City Followers of Christ Church.

Like all members of the religious order, Beagley did not receive medical care.

His condition worsened Sunday and members of the church gathered for prayer, Benton said.

The church is a fundamentalist Christian denomination that recently made headlines after two members were arrested and accused of using prayer instead of medical care to try to cure their deathly ill daughter.

In March, the boy’s 15-month-old cousin, Ava Worthington, died at home from bronchial pneumonia and a blood infection.

Her parents, Carl and Raylene Worthington, also failed to contact a doctor and are awaiting trial on criminal charges in her death.

Oregon lawmakers passed new laws striking down legal shields for faith-healing parents after several children from the Followers of Christ church died in the 1990s.

The Oregon City church is not associated with a mainstream denomination.

  2. You know someone …
You know someone that was healed? wow did they have a cold and take vitamin c then pray and the cold went away? Thats a miracle!

  3. Honestly, I don’t …
Honestly, I don’t believe this had ANYTHING to do with beliefs and much less “moronic beliefs” as you have suggested. It was peer pressure from a controlling cult that demands they follow what they (man) say and if not the will be shunned from family. It’s interesting how we quickly dismiss something based from our bias views. I believe there is something terribly wrong with this church and it’s a cult, but I know that God does heal with true faith because I know people that have received it

  4. Organized religion …
Organized religion is man-made, but it does not reflect the truth and divine touch of the original scriptures. Careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water.

  5. Jail these people …
Jail these people and torch the church. What a waste of a poor young mans life. He was not allowed medical treatment to save his life because of his parents moronic beliefs. The same thing happened to the boy’s cousin. What a shame. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs, but others shouldnt have to die for them.

  7. Not at all saying …
Not at all saying we shouldn’t go to the doctors btw. Just saying that it’s not as black and white as you would like it to be. I know of people that prayed for healing for years and didn’t receive UNTIL they for themselves studied scripture and allowed it to change their hearts which caused them to repent, forgive people that may of hurt them in their past etc. Then they were healed. So, you see…there is much more to it than just praying and sadly most people only go to church on Sunday.

  8. Hmmm, this is sad. …
Hmmm, this is sad. However, I strongly disagree with the assumptions that this “proves” religion to be false. Scripture doesn’t just say lay hands and they will be healed. There are TONS of scriptures that say we must first obey God. The world is fallen and illness is part of it. I think the family here wasn’t walking with Christ. They were following a church and it’s teacher, not Christ. They were probably also walking in faith that they didn’t have. This happened to the disciples.

    Not only to control …
Not only to control those superstitous people but to make money off of them also, religion is a business like any other, except they dont have to pay taxes

    Faith doesnt heal …
Faith doesnt heal people, and now the parents are paying for it. How many children have to die before you come to your senses, god doesnt work past the creation. He put everything in our hands and its up to us, what do you think free will is, if god saves peoples lives then he would save people from murderers, cancer, aids, not just pick a few kids to save and let millions others die, use your brain. Thats if there is a god, im still uncertain, i need proof, not a book written by man

Wait! Let me examine both sides.

    OK, I am finshed.

    They are killing their children.

Thanks for encouraging me to look at both sides before making up my mind . . . .

  12. These folks are …
These folks are drinking the grape Kool-Aid.

This cult is dangerous and members with children should be closely monitored so they don’t kill their children.

  13. I believe that …
I believe that everyone has a right to practice their faith, so long as doing so causes no harm to human life or well-being. Those children have no control over their parent’s choices.

Personally, I think organized religions are man-made and only serve to control groups of superstitious people.. Rational people need to step in a protect these children-
Let the adults of this group die off from lack of medical care..

    What most people …
What most people fail to realize about groups like this is that physical life isn’t important. Following God’s law is more important than following man’s law. Where some see neglect, others see faith. They are ridiculed because they have firm enough convictions to hold on to those beliefs.

I understand why people feel the way they do about this group, but examine both sides before passing judgment. They aren’t killing anyone. They are putting their lives in their God’s hands.

  15. Christians always …
Christians always ask me why I am so outspoken against religion – this case is exhibit A.

Delusional people pray to an imaginary god to heal their child and he dies when a simple office visit to the doctor could have saved his life.

I’m sorry, but religion needs to go. The sooner we get rid of misguided faith in something that doesn’t exist the better off we will all be.

  16. I knew this kid, I …
I knew this kid, I went to school with his big sister…. Its so sad, beside their faith they were so nice! I cant believe this.

    How are all of …
How are all of these people not in jail for murder? Are they using a time machine to ship judges and jurys in from the dark ages to try these cases?

If your actions kill your kids, its murder. If adults want to pray themselves to death I’m completely fine with it, were better off without them, but when they kill their kids, they should get the chair.

  18. How could you slant …
How could you slant it any other way?

    You should be shot.

oh well miracles are limited i guess XD

This is a horribly slanted news video.

  22. You see the …
You see the difference between the Travoltas and this family, In this case you see the religion and the family as neglectful here, and in the Travoltas and Scientology they brush it away.

  23. This is like reason …
This is like reason number 12 why I’m an Atheist. In no particular order, there are dozens of reasons, and it’s mind-numbing how so many Christians just don’t care about this happening. That’d be number 13.

  24. this story is so …
this story is so sad. one because if the persons family believed in god why they did not believe god had provided a medical cure for them . when a medical cure appears for any disease we should be thankfull to god for that and for those who have spent their lives to find cures . we should thank god for them. ive been a christian 20 years and i will say i have seen few healings and many failures. i conclude that gods divine power is very very hard to access. people need to know that the reality.
