For more than 24 hours, inmates at the Reeves County Detention Center 1 have been rioting. Inmates from inside the prison told KMID the riot is still going on. One inmate says if the riot doesnt end soon the National Guard will be coming in and taking over. “There were three inmates sick and instead of taking care of them they put them in the hole, they just gave them medication that was just putting them to sleep, ” an inmate in RCDC 1 said. Inmates at the Reeves County Detention Center 1 say medical incidents like those happen all the time. Prisoners arent getting the help they need. Inmates asked prison staff to take the three sick inmates to the hospital. They said no, we are not going to do that. You guys do it however you want to do it. So that’s why we are doing this, ” he said. Inmates told KMID theres only one doctor who comes once a week to the prison to take care of about 3,000 prisoners. They say theres no dental care. One prisoner says he feels like the inmates are treated like little dogs because theyre immigrants. ” No dental service. All they do is check your teeth, all they do is say theyll call you and they never do, ” he said. The Reeves County Sheriffs Office says the riot started at about 5 oclock on Saturday and that inmates have completely destroyed one section of the detention center. As of Sunday night, prisoners are negotiating with Warden McDaniel and the Mexican Consulate to get better food and medical attention. “We have tried to negotiate with him in the past but he didn’t come thru with his word. So that’s why we have to what we have to do now. Now he wants to negotiate but why now why did have to get to this level, ” he said. Family members from across the country are calling the KMIDs newsroom worried about their love ones. “I am scared. He has been outside since last night right now they dont have food,” inmates wife said. Inmates are still outside in the cold and all they have are their mattresses. The Reeves County Sheriffs Department told us they have set up tents for them and moved some inmates to RCDC 3. They plan to move more inmates tomorrow to another county near by. We have tried to contact the Geo Group, who manages the facility by e-mail and phone. But, they havent gotten back to us.
