Afghanistan: Private Matthew Pepi contact
Australian troops have taken advantage of the unusually mild winter in Afghanistan to maintain constant pressure on the Taliban. In the past three weeks there have been a series of combat engagements with Taliban as part of Afghan National Army, coalition and Australian operations in the Baluchi and Chora valleys.
One Australian soldier serving with the MRTF was wounded in these combat operations on 28 December 2008. Private Matthew Pepi has since returned to Australia for ongoing medical treatment and rehabilitation.
The casualty sustained in the firefight was evacuated while that contact was ongoing and that was only achieved through the prompt and highly professional aero-medical evacuation Lieutenant Colonel Shane Gabriel said. That battle lasted two hours and combat imagery from the incident released today shows the intensity of the protracted combat engagement that saw Australian troops fight from quala (walled living compound) to quala. Private Matthew Pepi, from the Darwin-based 7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment suffered wounds to his lower body.
