i am currently a pre med student in undergrad, and i plan on applying to med school in the near future. i received a minor disciplinary action in college, and i wonder how it will affect my chances. below is the explanation i will put on my med school application. thanks

"Frustrated with a friendship and stressed out during junior year, I vented my emotions by posting angry comments about a student on my Facebook wall. No inappropriate interactions, conflicts, or threats ever took place, but as a precaution, a dean prohibited further contact with the student (NOT considered as an institutional action). Also, to help me manage my stress and express my emotions healthfully, the dean referred me to counseling and required me to maintain a therapeutic relationship with a clinician. Initially, I didn’t take full advantage of this invaluable service, and my wellbeing didn’t improve much. At the end of junior year, I slept through a counseling appointment and didn’t reschedule immediately. Consequently, I was found responsible for “failure to comply”. I received a disciplinary/institutional formal warning and the directive to continue counseling.

I took full responsibilities and began to interact more proactively with my clinician. As a result, I learned how to effectively manage my stress and greatly improved my emotional health. I also realized that while it is legal to say certain things on Facebook, some statements will invariably cause concern and trigger a response. From this experience, I became a more mature, sensitive, and amiable person."

this had nothing to do with cheating, drugs/alcohol, or violent/assault. i know this isn’t a death sentence, but will it have a major impact? thanks again

There are no guarantees, but this situation does not sound serious enough to prevent admission.

My children are about 38 and 45 yrs old; which is, as we all know, old enough to DO the Right / Polite Thing. Back in 2009, I was hospitalized for TWO MONTHS and neither of them sent any cards or flowers, much less came and visited me, not even phoned me (more than one cursory call) to see how I was recovering (one month was for a surgery for a tumor IN THE BRAIN; the second month was for an overnight surgery that had serious complications).
AFTER RAISING THEM AS A SINGLE MOM, THEIR ACTIONS HURT AND MY BODY REACTS TO THE HURT BY GIVING ME MASSIVE MIGRAINES, WHICH I AM TRYING TO AVOID. After they were out of H.S., I got remarried. He was a Tall/big man, so. while he was alive, they treated me Quite Nicely. Does ANYONE know a BOOK or something to get MY REACTION to their bad behavior TO CHANGE? I need to know how to do a new technique/some new techniques, for me to change My response to their behavior – it is a totally different thing from youth or teens, trying to interface with adult children who live over 1500 miles away!!
I know I can not change their actions! I admit I am ashamed they are acting like this as they were raised to treat ALL people with respect. When they were young, we were Great Friends and had a lot of fun going places and doing things together on a tight budget. Even after my younger child had graduated, he said that he realized then that the job I had done was a very stressful one and he should have been more appreciative of what I was struggling with to keep them fed and clothed (my ex lied to the courts and got the support cut down to $50 a Month! — in the ’70s). Later, after they had children, they both acknowledged the great job I had done raising them, doing fair discipine (they both incorporated the Parent Effectiveness Training methods I had learned and used on them).
They now accuse me of all kinds of actions. IMO, it is Quite difficult to prove you did not ‘Hit Someone’ or post something on FaceBook, or any other inoccuous actions like that!
Now, after I am widowed and disabled; their actions towards me are in the toilet. My son calls me names (such as psychiatrically challenged – an evil family member is a RN. She thinks she knows Everything in the medical field so she has given my son medical terminology) and my daughter has taking advantage of me financially. This is Not how I raised them to treat Anybody!! As I mentioned, I know I have at least one estranged family member that is encouraging the younger one (if not Both) to treat me badly, but he/they is/are making the decision to do it.
I do Not want any contact with that family member. Some reasons are: she tried to have the funeral home reschedule MY husband’s funeral as it was Not Convenient for Her. She also accused me of stealing a vehicle of her’s when I was visiting but she did not ask her Own Son Where the vehicle was. He had the keys, as he had been out Late the previous night using it, I had not used the OLD vehicle for about 2 days and also refused to stain her large deck {I said I was there on Vacation for my nephew’s wedding and to see my infant (less than a month old) grand daughter; I think she was upset to loose the Free Labor she was counting on!}. She also phoned my late husband who was on an emergency business trip and told him I had taken the car; she never apologized after she found it! I had gone out and rented a vehicle and left her house because of her erratic actions such as yelling in the room I was staying in during the middle of the night. When I arrived at my son’s house in the rental, he thought I had driven the ’stolen’ vehicle as well as the ‘rental’ vehicle about 100 miles. I Never figured out how Anybody could expect Someone to be able to do That trick!!
In a quick phrase, I need to know HOW to change MY reaction to my adult children’s bad behavior.

Wow, you had a lot to say here but pigeon holed the issue with one word that really doesn’t get mentioned enough "Respect", it’s the name of the game like the song Aretha sings, gimme gimme gimme.

Actually I do understand what you are going through and have a suggestion, but I got to tell you that; when I’ve witnessed this type of activity from sons or daughter towards a parent, there’s usually more going on than meets the eye. My wife who was widowed took extreme abuse in the form of disrespect from her sons (still does today on a small scale) when we married, and I was dumbfounded by the disrespect which came in the form of; obsessive complaining about her in less than flattering terms, total lack of respect and hurtful accusation. Even though I married her a full two years after she had been widowed, it didn’t seem to make a difference to the boys.

What I saw on a regular basis was; her making excuses for her behavior, start yelling back and eventually crying of heartbreak that she had been treated in such a fashion by her off spring. As in most things I do in life; I think and then respond, which is what I told her with one caveat. Don’t fight back in a normal manner with adult children, rather, go back to basics! When one of the kids is being rude, realize it! And then act appropriately (no you can’t send them to their room), without being adversarial. My suggestion to was to learn how to quickly identify when one of these situations was occurring and nip it in the bud with one simple sentence: Don’t speak to me in anger or like I am a child! If you want to have an adult conversation we can continue, otherwise I’ll have to hang up or ask you to leave!

No if and’s or but’s, if you are being disrespected challenge the premise immediately. Know this; arguing back or telling an adult they are wrong tends to light the fire, but correcting someone displaying bad behavior is the right thing to do. Got to tell you though, my wife had the hardest time being able to tell when the disrespect was going to happen, seemed like the boys always knew when to strike!

I do wish you the best of luck and do not have a good answer for their lack of concern about your physical condition other than to say; there may be more to this story than you could possibly write in Y/A

My mom was suffering from small cell lung cancer. Instead of her normal round of chemo, she was admitted to the hospital for over a week. She was bedridden. When people are bedridden after surgery or illness, medical staff prescribe some drug to prevent blood clots forming in a lower artery and moving to the brain. My mom died days after she was released from the hospital…. from a blood clot to the brain. Do i have a case? Should i contact my lawyer for a wrongful death case or malpractice lawsuit? Thanks for any response.
Okay, thanks people. Pretty much what’s been rolling around my head. no proof. too much money. and oh yeah, GRIEF was my first reaction, @** hole. I’m far too young to lose my mother. I am heartbroken. This is why i hate asking questions. It’s been one year today that she passed away.

Impossible to say, you could contact a lawyer, but it is the kind of case that will take years and lots of money from you for the lawyers and experts before anything will be resolved. And the only people who will get any money from this will be the lawyers.

I’ve been with my girl for a couple of months now. Yes it is long distance and I know what comes with them, it isn’t my first one. Now she has Glang fever, 3 weeks ago I saw on her facebook that she had met up with her ex and went to pizza hut with him. I was not happy with that. But now 3 weeks later she has the fever, while I was talking to her she let slip that her ex has it too. I done my research and the main way it passes is through physical contact ie saliva, is this a coincidence or what? I would prefer medical responses and no stupid ones.

Infectious mononucleosis (IM; also known as EBV infectious mononucleosis or glandular fever or Pfeiffer’s disease or Filatov’s disease[1] and sometimes colloquially as the kissing disease from its oral transmission or simply as mono in North America and as glandular fever in other English-speaking countries) is an infectious, widespread viral disease caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), one type of herpes virus, to which more than 90% of adults have been exposed.[2] Occasionally, the symptoms can reoccur at a later period.[3] Most people are exposed to the virus as children, when the disease produces no noticeable symptoms or only flu-like symptoms. In developing countries, people are exposed to the virus in early childhood more often than in developed countries. As a result, the disease in its observable form is more common in developed countries. It is most common among adolescents and young adults.[4]

Especially in adolescents and young adults, the disease is characterized by fever, sore throat and fatigue, along with several other possible signs and symptoms. It is primarily diagnosed by observation of symptoms, but suspicion can be confirmed by several diagnostic tests.

Cheating: I would think so!

In July of 2010 my wife was sentenced to 18mos in prison for ALLEGEDLY Endangering her teenage daughter. My Wifes case evolved from that of her oldest brothers case in that he was convicted of multiple counts of rape and other sex crimes and sentenced to 50 plus years in prison as the result of some VERY FALSE allegations that were made by my wifes daughter, who swears by the right hand of God that she was raped and molested by him even though there is no medical proof to corroberate her claims that this happened. According to the Police, Prosecutors and Child Welfare Agency, "Teen-agers do NOT lie" and that whenever a "Teen-ager" makes such allegations against an "Adult" they should most certainly be taken as Gospel as "Teen-agers" do NOT lie about these things. If they said it happened, It happened. Again "Teen-agers do NOT lie".
So meanwile there are two VERY TRULY INNOCENT people, my wife and brother in law sitting in prison for crimes they did NOT commit. Fortunately my brother in law was able to appeal his conviction. But my wife was not as she pled out to a lesser charge as was recommended by the attorney who represented her in her case. This attorney has filed for an early release twice and both times these request were denied. Two of the biggest challenges we face are a BIASED Judge and a CORRUPT Prosecuting attorney, Both of whom are unwilling to listen to logic, morale or reason, as both evidently "LACK" the common sense in which to do so. This Judge and Prosecutor also "LACK" the ability to decipher "Factual Reality" from "Fictional Reality", this can be further proven by their ineptness, incompetence as well as their stupidity.
In closing, I can only ask and further hope that there is Someone out there who would be more than willing to help get my wife a fair deal so she can come home without further execution of this ridiculous prison term she was given. She didnt commit the crime so why should she have to do the time. There is no logical reason that I can think of, Can you?

My wife was recently (July 2010) contacted by a collections agency for a medical bill dating back to 2001. Apparently there was some serious miscommunication back in 2001, between the medical group and the insurance company, and her parents (whose insurance she was on at the time).

In 2005 – the only other contact she’s had with this collection agency – they had contacted her, at her *current* cell phone number. She talked with her parents, they talked with their insurance company, etc, and at least she and her parents thought that the matter was closed.

Fast foward to last month. She again gets contacted by this agency, after over five years of silence. The relatively minimal initial charge ($255) had grown to a number around $450 by their count, thanks to interest. In speaking with her, they find out that she’s in a different state now and decided to re-adjust the interest rate to some sort of higher interest rate, supposedly applicable to our current state and retro-actively all the way back to 2001. Their new bill? $580.

I spoke with them on the phone yesterday for the first time, and they told me that "it is always the responsibility of the patient to pay these debts." Meaning they say they are completely in the right to charge this interest. Keep in mind that the only "evidence" of initial ($255) debt that they have is a single page, fax-looking thing from the medical group back in 2001 that very non-descriptly lists the charges, totalling that amount. On top of that – making the deal even shadier – they offered to settle this whole thing "for $500 even."

From all searching that I can do, it appears the statute of limitations has expired on this, especially considering that no activity has taken place on this bill since 2001 and that she (we, now) were never sued. However, after hearing from them last month, we looked at my wife’s credit report to see that they had a – surprise – negative inquery into her history. (It obviously doesn’t look good for a collection agency to be hitting your credit) It would certainly appear, though, that this company saw the earlier debt ($255) as small potatoes, and delayed contact in order to let it grow. Again – as mentioned – it took over five years for them to contact my wife at the same phone number that they did earlier, when she thought it was resolved. Either that is the scummiest of practices, or that is the dumbest of collection agencies.

So here’s the dilemma. We don’t want my wife’s credit rating to be hit by this. Statute of limitations – to where we could be sued by this amount – appears to be expired. The collection agency’s response to this is that they can try to collect (negatively affecting my wife’s credit) as long as they want. Should I attempt to settle with them? I can’t attempt to describe the emotional toll that this has caused at this point … the collection agency is rude (surprise!) to my wife and she feels she is hounded by this. We could afford to pay it, but (1) this is letting a pretty shady business win and (2) there is no guarantee that they will not re-approach my wife in another five years, with some astronomical figure, claiming the debt was never gone.

Any advice? Thanks in advance!

First, derogatory items age off credit reports 7-1/2 years from the date of first deficiency. This is per the FCRA and nothing restarts the clock. There is no way a bill from 2001 should be on her credit report. If it is, dispute it as being beyond the reporting period.

Second, the Statute of Limitations (SOL), the timeframe to bring lawsuit, varies from state to state. Check yours: http://www.bcsalliance.com/y_debt_sol.html. Typically the SOL starts from the date of last activity or last payment. Making a payment can restart the SOL.

The collection agency can continue to try to collect the debt but they cannot report it to the credit bureaus and if they sue, they would lose when you use the SOL as an affimative defense.

In this case, send the collection agency a certified, return receipt letter telling them to cease all contact. They must stop but will probably sell the debt off to another zombie debt collector. You may have to send another letter to the new collection agency.

If this expedition goes ahead, we will not be able to understand why you prefer to lose human lives just because the English scientists want to study plants and animals,” said a statement from Iniciativa Amotocodie, an indigenous peoples’ protection group. “The people die in the forest frequently from catching white people’s diseases. It’s very serious. It’s like genocide.”

“White people’s diseases” include simple colds and flu, to which isolated tribes have no immunity, as well as measles, smallpox, yellow fever, whooping cough and malaria. Some 50 to 90 per cent of isolated tribal members commonly die after their first contact with outsiders – even when medical help is available.

Anthropologists have also weighed into this bizarre neo-colonial debate – with its hint of Victorian do-gooders clashing with indigenous sensibilities – by claiming that the British and Paraguayan scientists will be at considerable risk if the expedition goes ahead. “Contact with isolated groups is invariably violent,” says Jonathan Mazower, Director of Advocacy of Survivor International, an NGO that campaigns for the rights of tribes. Isolated tribes often throw spears at groups they believe have come to cause them harm. The Ayoreo are much feared by other tribes,” says John Gimlette, a barrister and travel writer who has spent time in the area and wrote At the Tomb of the Inflatable Pig, an account of his travels in Paraguay. “I remember a farmer telling me that they’re very warlike, very emotional and their first response is always to kill.”

And if that is not enough to put off the hardiest of adventurers, the Chaco forest, which is twice the size of the UK, is known as “green hell”. Exotic wildlife includes jaguars, pumas, giant anteaters and otters, prehistoric lungfish and the great fighting river fish. In summer it is a dustbowl; in winter the rains come and turn it to glue. Although the forest covers almost two-thirds of the country, only four per cent of the population lives here. “It’s fanciful to say that the tribes who have survived there have done so because of their spears,” says Gimlette. “They’ve survived because no one else wants to live there.”

My first reaction is "Why". My second reaction is "Why", as is my third, fourth etc.

Why do we "civilised" Peoples always think we have to stick our noses into cultures that we do not understand? The Crusades, Christian Missionaries- let’s leave other people to live the way they want to, or are the lack of "Soap Operas" a reason to "educate" them.

Really upsets me R.

I recently purchased a drink from a popular drink company, in a glass bottle. After opening it and taking a drink I cut my lip. Upon further observation I found that the lip of the bottle was chipped right around the rim. I poured the rest of the drink out and found a shard of glass and smaller particles of glass inside the bottle.I didnt need medical attention but I did contact the manufacturer and they requested that I mail the bottle back in at their expense so they could investigate. Yesterday after about 5 weeks with no response I called them back to find out the results. The rep told me the incident was caused by some sort of mechanical problem and offered to send me some free coupons. I said that it was worth more than any coupons to have gone thru this. She then said that corporate handled any monetary damages and asked me how much I felt was appropriate whereby I stated I dont know, and maybe I should contact a lawyer. She is going to mail the bottle back along with the testing results with the findings that it was a mechanical problem that caused this problem. And that corporate would contact me concerning the monetary damages. My question is how much would seem fair to ask for, and should I settle or should I get an attorney. Because I dislike conflicts and time consuming issues. What would you do? Thanks for reading and to those of you who respond.

I’d drop it. I would not ask for any money at all. Its just a very small mishap. I just think you are going way overboard on this.

I work at a Coldstone Creamery in Colorado. There were about 12 employees by the time I left, we all work part time. I had about 20 hours a week.

My Boss recently laid me off because my Father was in the hospital and I’ve had to take 2 weeks off to take care of him. I went in to talk with my boss and asked what happens when I’m ready to work again, to which her response was, "We’ll see if I can get you back on the schedule, if not, then too bad." She hired someone else to take over my hours.

Honestly, she’s got me really pissed off and now that my father is feeling better, I’d kind of like my job back. If she doesn’t give me the 20 hours a week I used to work, is that illegal under the FMLA? Should I contact a lawyer or something for more information? Any help is appreciated.

You need to have worked for them 12 months and 1250 hours during that time to be eligible, and half-time work wouldn’t meet that requirement. Also, businesses with fewer than 50 employees are exempt, which would appear to nix it right there. Sorry.
